what kids hear

Imagine for a moment
That you are three feet tall
Attempting to be noticed
But your person is quite small

Everyone is talking
You have something to add
But loud voices overpower
So you give up, and you feel sad

Your favourite show is on
And you are just about to laugh
TV turns off without warning
When mom says it’s time to bath

You ask your dad to reach for
A toy, he says, “one sec”
But after several minutes
Moves from one task to his next

You are told that you are tired
That you should go to sleep
But you are filled with energy
And would rather herd the sheep

You are jazzed about a story
One you really want to tell
But no one stops to listen
Because of this, you start to yell

"Say please, and now say thank you"
"Hurry, we have somewhere to be"
"Share your toys and quiet down"
"Before we leave, be sure to pee"

"Stand up, sit down, be good, don’t fight"
"Hold my hand, and please don’t spill"
"Be careful, get dressed, take one more bite"
"No running here, please sit still"

All day long, children are reared
And as their parents, that’s our job
But let's acknowledge that
It's irritating to be mobbed

Kids have things they want to say
And things they want to do
They have feelings, show emotions
And can think for themselves too

We know that kids have loads of fun
But let’s recall, it’s also tough
Short statures and small voices
Can sometimes feel like not enough
