cooking with kids

If you’d like to test your patience
I would suggest cooking with kids
They want to help with everything
Including unscrewing tight lids

The problem is that their small hands
Cannot get a solid grip
Jar smashes on the ground, and this
When mama’s patience starts to slip

Perhaps you’re baking cookies
Ingredients measured out with care
But pouring flour in the bowl
Leaves powder in the child’s hair

Milk, water, greasy butter
Spills on the countertop
Before mom sees, it’s everywhere
The floors needed a good mop 🤷‍♀️

Their sibling in the other room
Hears all of the commotion
Decide they want to be sous-chef
And join the poetry in motion

They say aloud each tablespoon
Stir standing on a stool
Pick eggshells dropped into the dough
Kitchen becomes both home and school

“Well, if I need a quarter cup
I should use the smallest one
But I could also use the ½
And fill to the middle just for fun!”

Although the kitchen’s messier
And it takes double the time
It's such a thrill to watch them
Light up with joy to squeeze a lime

It’s often in these moments
That are so simple and so pure
Kids make it clear, time spent with mom
Beats toys and tablets, that’s for sure
